Designing a strategy and planning guide

The Premier League leadership team tasked us with finding a solution to communicating their business strategy to the rest of the company in an impactful way. As part of their launch and comms plan, they wanted to include an employee ‘desk ref’ – something that people would keep on their desks and reference as a handy reminder and focus of what they were looking to do.

The catch? We had just over a week to create and produce whatever that would be.

We worked with the team to distill the information that would need to be included, as well as confirming what production outputs would be attainable in the time permitted.

A key consideration in this was how to achieve the brand’s true colours, which as neons would need testing to be achieved outside of expensive and timely Pantone methods.

We also discussed with the team how their communal office and desk spaces were set-up in order to understand how and where displaying the information might be most effective.

Our thinking included utilising space within areas such as the lifts and office canteen, but with the timings, budget and objective in mind we settled on individual print items that employees could each keep and refer to as and when they needed.

We prototyped and created a unique piece of print which utilised layered die cuts of the Premier League ‘Lion’ logo. This gave depth and interest to a concertina style leaflet, throughout which the story of the new strategy would unfold.

Working closely with the printers, we successfully recreated the bright brand colours through trial and testing of CMYK on a standard non-coated matte finish, which was both quicker and more cost effective than Pantone or GF Smith.

Lastly we also created digital versions of the ‘desk ref’, reworking the content and layout for the home screen of the company intranet to complement the print work and amplify the rest of the launch day comms.

I cannot speak more highly of the HexStudio team. They are proactive, creative, precise and punctual and deliver a personal service and I would recommend them for design work.
